Black women's portrayal in the media is negligent. When it is present it is often in demeaning forms. This has a very real impact on the way other people see black women in our society. It is important to broadcast more well rounded images of black women and though it has gotten better, it is not on par with the variety which white characters are able to demonstrate. There is a greater need for black women telling their own stories as well as white men to assist in the advancement of black women.
Because the media has such a profound influence on our lives it is reasonable to assume that it may have an impact on our views of certain groups of people. It is important to note whether those images are positive or negative and if they make us view people more positively or negatively. Black women, especially, have unique challenges with media portrayal. As bell hooks noted, they are largely erased from existence by the media, except in certain areas. It is not hard to prove this even a quick google image search of black people or women shows how little black women are portrayed. I want to document the effect of this erasure and note in which ways black women are be portrayed.
